DESCRIPTION OF PAINTINGS
My paintings are inspired by the landscape of Southern England. In these very recent paintings I am seeking to convey a pared-down,
elemental sense of place and mood - the impressions left in ones memory.
Although I work in oils on canvas, my choice of other materials is very personal - I was born in the Forest of Dean and the earth
pigments I use come from the Clearwell caves there. The choice of copper, gold aluminium or silver foil is both for their aesthetic
qualities and also as a representation of the elements themselves - the basic building blocks of a landscape. For the same reason,
I often use stone dust - pumice, lava and sandstone which also give a texture to the work and to alter the reflections on the
surface of the paintings.
